"I was a hidden child. I hid in this woman's house from ages three to five. I am grateful to her, but I do not know her name. I will never be able to thank her in a public way." Jeanine Burk

Survivor Stories

Eva Galler's Story

Eva Galler, her siblings, and her father were forced onto a death camp train. Many people aboard the train were tearing off the barbed wire that covered the windows and jumping off. Her father said that his three oldest children would jump and he would stay with the younger ones. First, Eva's brother jumped, then her sister, then her. The SS people shot at many of those who jumped. Eva wasn't shot and landed in a ditch of snow. After the train had passed and she couldn't hear it anymore, she stood up. She tore off the star they had made her wear. She promised never to wear a star again. She searched for her brother and sister and found them both dead. Eva discovered one of her friends who had been on the train had jumped and survived. Eva worked on German farm, under a false name, pretending to be Catholic, until the war had ended.

Soloman Radasky
Soloman Radasky had a job during the war. They were in a death camp in Poland, Birkenau. There were two big pipes that were pouring ash out of the crematoria. Soloman's job was covering up the ashes with sand. He worked from six until twelve then had to come back at five and worked until twelve. For a couple years, that was his job. Soloman had to cover lost ones with sand.

  2. One of the Ghettos had eight foot tall walls topped with barbed wire and glass
  3. In that Ghetto, five hundred thousand Jews were held

  6. The Polish Resistance tried to fight the Germans
  7. The family that owned the Warsaw Zoo hide three hundred people in the animal cages

Why the paper clip is a symbol of the Holocaust:
The paper clip is a symbol of the Holocaust because in the Holocaust, paper clips were worn on collars to show that they were a Jew. I also learned that a school collected paper clips so the students could understand how many people died in the Holocaust. After collecting the paper clips, a real railcar, that was used to transport Jews, was containing all the paper clips that were collected.

My personal feelings about the Holocaust and what I learned in this unit
I see the Holocaust as a war, it was a war of good and bad, wrong and right. I was very pleased when my remarkable and sensational teacher, Mr. Kuntz told us that we were going to learn about the survivors and good parts. I don't think I could see myself not crying or something if we learned about the ones lost in that time of sorrow. But I do find the survivors and their stories interesting. I LOVE what Marsha is doing! I admire her.
